Hay Festival – Meadow Stage

25th May - 10:00 am

Broadcaster and author Kate Humble talks to three remarkable individuals who created leading climate projects, igniting hope and progress, all inspired by events at Hay Festival in previous years. Film producer Franny Armstrong honed the groundbreaking 1010 Campaign with Ed Miliband on the train back from Hay Festival in 2009; Garry Charnock was inspired by an event at Hay Festival 2005 featuring Sir David King to create the first carbon neutral village, in Ashton Hayes; and Professor Ed Hawkins created the Climate Stripes, illustrating temperature change, as part of the Hay Festival Trans.MISSION project in 2018. Come along and be inspired to create your own projects and help transform our society to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.

Hay Festival – Global Stage

25th May - 1:00 pm

Kate talks to Mark Cocker and Hamza Yassin. Naturalist Mark Cocker has always been fascinated by swifts, and in 'One Midsummer’s Day' he sets out to discover their essence. Migrating swifts span continents and their 12-week stopover with us is the definition of summer. These birds without borders are a metaphor to express the unity of the living planet, for no creature, least of all ourselves, can live in isolation. Fellow wildlife enthusiast Hamza Yassin’s book Be a Birder is a joyful guide for beginners. The wildlife cameraman (and Strictly 2022 winner) explains how to identify birds quickly, understand bird behaviour and choose the right equipment. Born in Sudan, living in Scotland, Yassin’s first TV appearance was as Ranger Hamza on the CBeebies show Let’s Go for a Walk and he is a presenter on BBC One series Animal Park.

In conversation with Craig Foster, creator of My Octopus Teacher

30th May - 6:45 pm - Emmanuel Centre, London SW1P 3DW

Join Kate in conversation with Craig Foster, creator of My Octopus Teacher. It is rare we can ever drag Craig away from his beloved Kelp Forest, but he's coming to London to talk to me about his new book & his passion for the sea and what it can teach us. In this exclusive talk accompanied by incredible photography and never-before-seen footage of animal life, Craig will share his extraordinary adventures in the natural world, challenge us to consider our personal relationship to nature, and inspire us to help save the global ecosystem.

Hay Festival – Discovery Stage

31st May - 10:00 am

How can we live the lives we want without despoiling the environment we hold so dear? How do we balance the competing demands of public access, farming and wildlife against the backdrop of the climate and nature crises? Kate along with Tayshan Hayden-Smith, former professional footballer turned guerrilla gardener, Megan McCubbin, conservationist and wildlife presenter on BBC2’s Springwatch, and Paul Whitehouse, actor, writer and comedian, talk to the Chair of the National Trust, René Olivieri, about how we rediscover the power of connection with nature.

Hay Festival – Spring Stage

31st May - 5:30 pm

Kate chats with food production experts, Philip Lymbery and Ed Winters. Could cultivated meat from stem-cells grown in a bioreactor beat climate change, providing real meat but without the slaughter? Cultivated Meat to Secure Our Future: Hope for Animals, Food Security, and the Environment, co-edited by Philip Lymbery, argues that it could be a game-changer in reducing animal suffering and helping solve the growing crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and the rise of ill-health. Ed Winters demonstrates How to Argue With a Meat Eater (and Win Every Time), explaining the principles of veganism as a way to create a more ethical, kind and sustainable world, and breaking down every argument used against it.
